Is anyone else massively confused by The Decemberists?

For the last few years I have written them off as slightly bonkers American prog rock. Kind of Fleet Foxes with King Crimson albums. Then they team up with Robyn Hitchcock (who doesn’t) and I get a bit more interested. And then at his Robyn’s recent Maritime themed spectacular he plays this great new song about the waves. Turns out it isn’t his but a track from the most recent Decemberists album. It is called The Wanting Comes In Waves and is amazing. Well half of it anyhow. For half way through the song it goes horribly prog sounding not unlike Led Zeppelin (ulp).

Anyhow turns out that Decemberists album is great in a 60s English folky way – bit like the latest Magnetic Fields album – but I am sure if I get round to downloading it properly I’ll be permanently banned from tweenet.

All very confusing. I know it is possible, and in these enlightened times, acceptable to like both The Smiths and the Strawbs, but it still makes me feel a tad queasy.

Is it acceptable to like both The Smiths and The Strawbs?poll

  1. The Wanting Comes In Waves is fantastic, Ashley – yes, both parts! They performed the entire album back to front when I saw them a couple of months ago. Most of their old stuff isn’t really that proggy at all, so don’t let that put you off. There’s one song on The Crane Wife, and an EP called The Tain but aside from that they’re pretty much standard American folk, albeit with more accordians than is strictly necessary.
